Custom Flames on Your Radio Controlled Car
Creating a custom paint job for your new radio controlled cars lexan shell is great fun, I’ll show you how to do this with perfect results every time, no artistic skills required, you don’t need an airbrush or an entire weekend to do it, and you will be amazed at the fantastic results you can get with a little know how.
For the purpose of this article I have selected an old favorite of mine, the flames. The techniques can be applied to any design you can dream up, all you need is a little imagination.
First things first.
The first thing you need to do is clean the shell, use warm water and soap, be sure to rinse all the soap off and let it dry before your continue, it’s critical that the lexan shell is clean or your paint job won’t hold, or will have blemishes once your done.
The second thing you need to do is cut the shell out, we do this first for two reasons:
- It’s easy to line up the wheels and body posts to the chassis
- After it’s painted you will scratch the paint while you cut out the shell
Imagination is key
Now that we have the body cleaned and cut out we need to look for natural lines on the body that we can use to keep our design perfectly symmetrical, it’s often difficult to paint over vents and other highly detailed parts of the car so pick your locations wisely.
So after much debate we have decided to run a two colour flame down the side and the rest of the car is going to be black, in my example I’m going to use metallic red and purple to do the flames, and black for the rest.
Masking the Shell.
First thing I need to point out is that we paint the inside of the shell, the outside has a clear film which prevents over-spray, once the car is painted and ready for decals and stickers this can be removed, leave it intact until after you have painted the car.
For marking I normally use hobby shop masking tape, while you can use the standard masking tape you get from hardware shops, this tends to let tiny specs of paint through, while no-one will ever notice, you’ll know about it.
Mask the perfect flame
Now here is the trick, find a good image on google images or from somewhere off the internet, it really doesn’t matter where it comes from, if you have the ability you can draw your own, then scan in into a computer. Once you have your digital image, you can print this out using a standard inkjet printer.
At first I tried to to print to A4 Sticker paper, which you can get from any stationary shop, the problem with this is that the glue they use on the back sticks to the lexan, and even if you remove all of it the paint will not stick to these parts correctly. The right way to do it is to either use the wax backing of the A4 Sticker paper or get some other wax paper, apply masking take to the wax side and then print your design out on the marking tape. Remember that you will need to do this as a mirror image should you want text or numbers
Once done cut out your mask and apply it to the inside of the car. Mask out the windows and lights and whatever else you want, then apply the first layer of paint.
The First Layer
Dark colours first then light colours, it always pays to use a backing colour, silver for metallic or white for normal paint.
When you start applying the first layer of paint start very slowly, keep the can about 30cm away from the shell and do one light coat, don’t let the paint pool or it will run and look terrible. Leave this to dry then apply another coat, for best results you should apply between 5 and 10 layers for each colour. Once done remove the mask.
Now it’s time to do the two tone flame, which should be a clear area on your shell right in the middle of all the black. The black must be completely dry before you do this!
Now starting in the middle of the flame put down a very light layer of one colour, switch direction and do the other colour in the other direction, this will give you a faded two tone flame, repeat until you are happy that enough paint has been applied. The last step is to use white or silver paint to back your entire car.
Finally
Remove the over spray layer and apply your decals and your done. With a little practise you can make some amazing designs that will make you the envy of your local RC hobby club.

My son got a zen stone for Christmas last yr. We have not been able to figure out how to actually play the music that we have downloaded. It is fully charged! We pressed play and nothing happened. We Messed around w/ the button on top and still nothing!
Did you use the software that came with it to load music onto it? If you do not have it you can get it from Creative. You can also try using teh Sync feature in Windows media player. The music will not play if you add it directly to the player. Doing it that way, the player looks at the files as data, not music.

The Many Muses of Mike Oldfield
Mike Oldfield has, you could say, been around the block a few times. The British-born, sometimes Spaniard artist seems to have done it all in his life and career. The now 54 year old Mike Oldfield not only did it, but lived to tell about it; from his earliest of musical ventures, to his inter-continental homes, to his family life.
Oldfield’s earliest muse may have come at tremendous personal cost. Having left home at the tender age of 14 over differences with his parents, Oldfield struggled to make a name for himself in the entertainment business, performing in folk clubs in his native Reading and later in Essex. Despite his slightly dysfunctional upbringing, Oldfield was a tremendously talented musician and enjoyed limited success in his debut venture, a brother/sister folk duo act, The Sallyangie. One critic described the music on Sallyangie’s one and only album “oversaturated with fairy tale imagery – hormonally-charged rhapsodies of a teenage girl.” The lack of lyrical depth may have contributed to the band’s quick demise, but by this time Oldfield had nevertheless grazed the radar of the entertainment industry, making his mark as a noteworthy guitarist, despite his immaturity.
Undaunted by the apparent lack of success of his first real musical venture or perhaps buoyed by his brief exposure to fame, Oldfield instead took his experiences and directed them toward his subsequent venture; a stint in the band The Whole World. Although this gig, like his first, eventually folded too, it inspired Oldfield to begin his solo career. Even as he worked with The Whole World, he was planning what would become, in 1972, his first solo demo: Tubular Bells, which, incidentally, became the work that is now most commonly associated with Oldfield’s name.
Tubular Bells was unique in its very nature, since Oldfield himself played almost every instrument on the album himself, laying track upon track to achieve the final product. Although this technique is more common today, it was virtually unheard of in 1972. So it came as some surprise to Oldfield that, after peddling his demo for a year, the only company to take an interest in it was too broke to sign him. He took a job in 1973 playing guitar in a stage production in his despair.
It was here that that same formerly destitute music producer found Oldfield a year after their initial meeting. Perhaps it was fate: the producer, who was preparing to launch a new record label, signed Oldfield immediately (with great wonder as to why no one else had snatched him up during the previous 12 months). The rest, as they say, is history.
Oldfield’s Tubular Bells became the first release of a company whose name would later become almost synonymous with the music industry itself: Virgin Records. Incidentally, Tubular Bells is still the most successful instrumental album to date, putting both Virgin and Oldfield on the map as powerful forces in the industry.
Oldfield went on to release several more albums over the course of the next 30 plus years, and even re-released Tubular Bells in 2003. Something else that Oldfield did in those 30 years: travel. It was likely his travels about Europe and especially Spain that provided muse for many of Oldfield’s latest works.
Oldfield has admittedly always been fond of Spain’s Balearic Islands, having visited there often since the 1970′s. Oldfield actually left his native England for a period of time to live in Ibiza. Inspired by the music and party-like atmosphere of the island and its famous night clubs, he began work on his album Tubular Bells III.
But perhaps the bigger role that Ibiza played in Oldfield’s life was providing the backdrop for the introduction to his wife, Fanny, more than 20 years his junior. Despite their age difference, the couple got on well and eventually moved back to England and began a family.
Oldfield considers himself a true family man and looks forward to the birth of a second son in early 2008.
Oldfield’s wife and children seem to be his current muses. Oldfield is just as happy to stay at home with his little clan and tend to yard work as he is to be on stage performing.
Oldfield is also planning yet another major relocation; speculation is that he will return to Ibiza. Oldfield wants to raise his sons in a warmer climate and in a place that he feels will be safer for them than Britain. So what this move may do in terms of Oldfield’s future and career remains to be seen.
But Mike Oldfield fans seem pretty certain that the world has not yet heard the last of Oldfield, whose new perspective on life, thanks to his young family, may be the best source yet for his artistic inspiration, whether it be from Britain or Spain.

All the songs I’ve loaded are on the player, you can switch from song to song, but none of the songs will play. I’ve reset the player, deleted and reloaded the music and no luck. It’s a black Lyra, not sure of the model no.
If it’s under warranty, return it immediately for replacement.

Pros: Compact, Bright LCD, Comfortable controls, Good value for the money, user friendly, durable, good quality pictures,
Cons: Cannot adjust the speed fast enough for low light pictures.
Does not come with a case. Small Memory card.
Biggest complaint seems to be that Canon should have included a 1 or 2gb SD card. It comes with a 32MB memory card. With cards being so inexpensive it would not have made an appreciable difference in the cost and would have probably made this a true “5″ rating.

Prices on digital cameras have come down considerably while the quality has improved. It wasn’t too long ago that a 2-3 megapixel camera was the norm.
Now 7-8 is about average.
Selecting the right camera for you is dependent upon what you want out of the camera. If you just want to shoot family, or, vacation snap shots you probably cannot go wrong with any of these. However, if you into much more sophisticated photography, then you should probably consider SLR type cameras.

The Lumix cameras are good. Be sure to find one with a RAW mode for best acuity as Panasonic is known to be very heavy handed when it comes to noise suppression algorithms for jpegs.
You might check out the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ8. It has RAW and a Leica lens. They seem to trade in the $125 to $150 range at eBay. Every camera I own was bought used. It’s a great way to save money.
Also, keep in mind that Kodak sells some cameras with a Schneider lens that is very sharp.
