Good head unit for 2000 Mercury Cougar.?
Alright, I’m looking for a new head unit for my cougar, I only plan to swap the head unit at first, then get some decent speakers, and then probably a sub, so I don’t need a kit. I have been looking at the Alpine IDA X303 as it fits many of my below needs and wants, but I’m definitely not settled.
Needs:
Out of the box iPod and iPhone connectivity. (It would be great if it worked with second gen iPod Mini.)
HD radio ready.
Bluetooth ready.
At least two RCA out channels.
Rear facing USB for glove box storage of iPod.
1 or 1.5 DIN size.
Built in amp for 4 speakers, stereo sound.
Can not exceed $250.
Wants:
Forward facing USB and SDHC for MP3 playback.
HD radio built in.
Bluetooth built in.
Green back light and buttons, can have red highlights.
No CD player, Media receiver only (It just makes it one less part to break…)
AUX in on the faceplate.
Non removable faceplate.

If you are going to primarily use your iPod for music, go with an Alpine head unit for sure. I have a CDA-9887, and I could not be happier. The iPod navigation on the IDA models is the same, but the screen is more fancy. If you buy any brand other than Alpine, the navigation through albums, songs, and playlists is so much slower and more difficult.
As far as the built in amp, you’ll get about 18 watts out of the IDA head unit, but you can buy a plug and play add on from Alpine for around $100 that takes it to 45 watts RMS, and it is definitely worth it.
