why does the battery on the G1 phone go dead so quickly? even on standby, it only lasts 7 hours before dying.?

I just bought a G1 phone, and am amazed at how quickly the battery goes dead. Yesterday, I made two phone calls, sent a few text messages, and by 5pm, the battery was dead. Is there any way around this? From what I understand, the iPhone battery runs at least a day and half on standby, as opposed to 8-10 hours for the G1.

This seems to be one of the main issues with the G1 phone, and in this day and age of powerful mobile-computing devices, I’m not surprised.

It’s like, our technology is rapidly advancing in all areas – EXCEPT BATTERY TECHNOLOGY! We can now create a device that can get you online on a fast network in the palm of your hand with a screen you can touch, but we can’t come up with a freakin’ battery that lasts more than 5-6 hours. I don’t get it.
