Buy iPhone 4G outright, then use old sim card from 3GS after being trimmed? Is this possible?
Hi all,
I am looking to buy the iPhone 4G outright without any contracts, but have a few questions first:
I am planning to cut my old sim card (Optus Australia) down to a micro sim with one of those cutters… then put it in the iPhone 4G. Will it work? Does the iPhone 4G have to be unlocked?
If I can do this procedure successfully then I will buy this iPhone 4G

I’m not sure of the regulations and policies in Australia, however here are my thoughts.
1. If you cut the SIM card right, you will be able to use it. You just can’t go back.
2. Ask the company you are buying the iPhone 4 from if it’s unlocked.
3. Make sure that Optus supports the same 3G bands as the iPhone. Otherwise, you’ll be reduced to 2G.
At least in the US, no iPhone can be bought unlocked, and none are bought new without a contract. If you are in a similar position as the US, you will have to jail break the phone to unlock it. And even if it is legal there, as in the US, Apple may not support it, and your warranty will be VOID.
Australia uses the 850/900/2100 spectrum. The iPhone you buy should support all of those for best coverage. If you received 4G service in Perth, you would not be able to use the 4G service on the iPhone as iPhones don’t support LTE/WiMax
