Palm Latches On The Webos For Its Recovery

At the turn of the century, Palm Inc. lorded it over the US PDA/Smartphone markets peaking at $95 per share at NASDAQ.  A good decade thereafter, in 2010, its share price tethers between $4 and $7 and peaks only when there are rumours that a company is interested in taking over.  In early April, it rose to 20% with news of an impending purchase from wither Lenovo of China and earlier from HTC.  It was earlier rumoured that China’s ZTE Corp and Huawei were likewise interested.  But all these were doused as mere speculation.

A New CEO for a Turnaround or Sell Out

It took former Apple executive responsible in part to the iPod success to give some new life to the ailing company.  First taken in as head of its Product Development division and now CEO, Jonathan Rubinstein seems to be cut-out for the job of resuscitating Palm.  It had implemented some radical product strategies in 2009 to keep it afloat.  Too bad, those strategies were simply not enough.

  • Upscale smartphone features are de rigueur in the markets dominated by HTC and Blackberry.  The Palm Pre and Pixi products can be said to its best products in years.  The company needs to come out with more of these products to saturate it markets like what HTC and Blackberry, not to mention Nokia, is doing.  Unfortunately, while the Palm Pre could have saved the company, it came out at the wrong time with features and pricing that didn’t really match what its rivals had.   As capable as it is, without an underpowered battery, not even a simple FM radio, no microSD card slot, and no video recording, Palm Pre did have what it takes to match its rivals while pricing itself out of the market.  Adding insult to injury, the company comes out with the updated Palm Pixi Plus with just a WiFi added to the Pixi.  What was Palm thinking?
  • No exclusive distribution from any major carrier.  That’s sound enough.  After a lackluster distribution of its Palm Pre and Pixi mobiles from its Sprint-Nextel, with only 400,000 units sold during a period it had predicted to sell 700,000 units, it how has AT&T and other distributors selling its Pre Plus and Pixi Plus smartphones. None of its products carry the same appeal as the iPhone that can survive on exclusive distribution deal.
  • Concentrating on the right platform was critical in getting the right product while maintaining cost advantages. Abandoning its Windows Mobile efforts was a prudent thing to save on production cost that is now free from the Windows licensing.  It has also abandoned the older proprietary PalmOS as it really doesn’t make sense for a small nitch market player to have its own OS development team.  But it continued to maintain this team to supports its new WebOS platform when it could have realized 20% – 25% more savings using the open source Android that is fast emerging as the darling of the smartphone crowd.

Palm had the best strategies for a turnaround in 2009 but it was a clear case of too little too late.  With iPhone triumphant in the smartphone markets while HTC and Blackberry flexing more muscle to keep iPhone in check, Palm just didn’t stand a chance.  Its only hope now is to find a partner or buyer to continue the name.
