Ipod Vs Zune
Ipod Vs Zune

iPod vs. Zune, which is a better buy?
I currently own an old iPod Mini. It works great except that I’ve had it for 3 years and I want a new mp3 player. I need something with alot more memory and want video capabilities. So I am considering the 80GB classic iPod or the 80GB Zune. I love the iPods but am hearing rave reviews about the new Zune.
If I were to purchase a Zune, and have all my music currently on iTunes, will I run into any problems with the Zune software and transferring my music?
I hear that the music selection with iTunes is much greater than that of Zune. Can you purchase movies with the Zune software? Or do you just put movies you already have on DVD and put them on the Zune?
How do the battery life’s compare?
People are saying that the new 80GB Zune from Microsoft is finally the best alternative to iPods. Personally I’d recommend that you find someone, or go to a store that has them on display, and test them both out yourself. Since that you’re already an iPod user you’d probably like the Classic iPod much better in terms of interface and your current music collection. Espiecally if you’ve bought your music from iTunes with content protection, in that case you wouldn’t be able to transfer your music to any other music player (the Zune however plays unprotected .aac or .m4a files as well as protected and unprotected .wma, and .mp3) however iTunes offers a new service (iTunes Plus) that lets you upgrade your content protected files to unprotected for a price.
The main differences between the two music players is that the Zune has a much bigger screen (a bonus for video playback, a drain on batter power though) and the Zune has more features such as a FM Radio and Wi-Fi functions like wireless syncing and wireless sharing (again more drain on battery when having these functions on.)
The 80 GB iPod Classic plays videos with a smaller screen, but with all iPods it has a much larger store (iTunes Music Store) to purchase not only music but music videos, TV shows, iPod games, and you can even rent full length movies now. The iPod beats the Zune for battery life also. It lasts over 34 hours between charges with music playback. The Zune lasts ~20 hours.
The software for these programs is a different story. Currently the Zune player is nothing compared to iTunes (in my opinion), you should look into that before you switch. iTunes music store has been the leading music store for forever and has the largest collection of music and with the current popularity of iPods I don’t see that changing any time soon! It also offers a growing selection TV shows and other media (music videos, audio books, podcasts, movies, etc.)
No, you can’t download movies from Zune Marketplace, nor can you with iTunes (you can RENT them for 2 days though.) There’s several programs out there that convert DVDs to playable files for iPods and Zunes and many other players. But that’s another topic
Well I hope this helps with your question. You NEED to try both the products out yourself fully or ask to borrow someone else’s. If you’re an online music shopper you should stick with the iPod, otherwise the Zune is definetely worth a try.
Also if your music collection is under 16 GBs you should also consider the new iPod Touch, it also has a list of features of its own.
Wikipedia has a good list of features of the Zune.
I’ve also included two other links to sites that compared the Zune.
