Belkin says that its Laptop Cooling Pad uses no more than 5% of a laptop’s battery

But sometimes that innovative spirit has been a detriment. Last year, Asustek issued a new version of its Eee on average every six weeks, which analysts said confused consumers.

“We might have offered too many models because of our competitive engineering culture,” Mr. Shih said, adding that the company won’t repeat this mistake. This year, Asustek plans to release three new versions.

When closed, the $20 Kensington LiftOff Portable Notebook Cooling Stand (Kensington.com) resembles a one-inch thick plastic briefcase with handles. Once the stand is opened, one piece lies flat while the other piece is raised to one of two heights, elevating the laptop. The top raised piece supports the laptop and has a hole in the center, designed to allow air to pass under the laptop, thus cooling it off without a fan. However, this no-fan method left my lap feeling a bit warm. When you’re done with the Kensington LiftOff, you can close it shut and carry it using its built-in handles. But its plastic parts felt flimsy and unstable, especially compared with the Belkin Laptop Cooling Lounge.

At an event this month, Acer unveiled a new line of notebooks, including a series of ultra-thin laptops called Acer Aspire Timeline, for which prices will start at $799. The new PCs use a low-voltage Intel Corp. processor that enables eight hours of HP DV8300 battery life.

Second, for all its thinness, the Adamo is relatively heavy. It weighs four pounds, versus three pounds for the Air.

Finally, it has mediocre Sony VGP-BPL4 life. In my tough battery test, where I turn off all power-saving features, leave on Wi-Fi, and play an endless loop of music, the Adamo got just 2 hours and 44 minutes, which likely translates in normal use to maybe 3.5 hours. By contrast, the Air lasted 40 minutes longer in the same test, and the Lenovo beat the Dell by 21 minutes.

The Eee was born of similar thinking. Although the idea seems simple — strip down a laptop and keep the price low — Mr. Shih said the company spent time trying to make sure it did many of the things consumers wanted. The machine starts quickly, it easily connects to the Internet and the battery lasts a long time.

Belkin’s $30 Laptop Cooling Pad (Belkin.com) reminded me of Microsoft’s offering in shape and size. Both are square, unlike the rectangular Logitech tray, and both have flip-out stands and a wave-like shape that leaves open space under the laptop. Belkin says that its Laptop Cooling Pad uses no more than 5% of a laptop’s battery. But the Belkin fan was slightly louder than Microsoft’s and considerably louder than Logitech’s. It also seemed to be a bit stronger, blowing more air than the others.

That’s luring consumers like Arun Ravindran, an information-technology consultant from Irvine, Calif., who had been using a desktop PC he built from components. “I always wanted a really small laptop that’s easy to carry around,” he says, but the offerings from companies like Sony Inc. were too expensive at $1,000 or more.

Like the Air and the ThinkPad 300 series, the Adamo uses a screen that’s about 13 inches, with good resolution. And, like its two competitors, it’s very thin. In fact, the Adamo is thinner than the tapered Air at the latter’s thickest point. The Adamo also has a far better selection of built-in ports than its Apple rival, though almost all are inconveniently placed in a Sony VGP-BPL2C protruding strip at the back of the machine.

Asustek started in 1989, when Mr. Shih and other top engineers left Acer and began building motherboards, the cards that hold microprocessors and other electronics in PCs. It remained a component supplier until 1997, when it launched its first Asus branded notebook.

Both the new iPhone and iPhone OS are packed with features that make a great product even better. But, for many users, the software may be enough of a boost to keep them from buying the new model.

Microsoft’s $30 Notebook Cooling Base (Microsoft.com/hardware) will come in white and black when it’s available early this summer (Amazon is accepting orders now). Compared with the Logitech, its fan was a little noisy. But the Microsoft tray was considerably smaller and thinner, making it more portable.

It’s fair to say that the arrival of the second iPhone has caused a bit of a fuss. Interestingly, the new features it has – 3G, GPS, the ability to run third-party applications – only just bring it up to the level at which most mobile manufacturers have been running for some years.

But we’re not going to get bogged down in industry implications of the iPhone 3G, just get on with reviewing the hardware, and the new features of iPhone software 2.0.

Familiar face
From the front, the iPhone is largely unchanged. It still uses solid-state memory in 8GB or 16GB capacities. It gets a new curved back panel that comes in shiny black plastic or, with the 16GB version, the choice of a white finish.

Don’t be alarmed by the word ‘plastic’: typically for an Apple product, it feels solid and classy, and nearly all the people we polled preferred it to the old matt silver metal finish. On paper, the new iPhone is not thinner than its predecessor, but the curved back makes it feel so nonetheless.

The recessed headphone socket is gone so you can use any headphones, without an adaptor. Great news, even if a little of the jack is exposed due to the curved back.

Impressive GPS
As you’d expect, the inclusion of GPS doesn’t mean any unsightly external aerial. It locked onto satellites quickly, taking between 30-45 seconds from ‘cold’ (when started up in an entirely new location).

A blue marker shows your position on the familiar Google Maps application, and it will do visual and text – but not spoken – directions to a location. It uses A-GPS, which means that it gets (A)ssistance from the network provider to maintain a good fix even in built-up areas. It dropped out in a couple of London’s alleyways, but quickly recovered once you got back to wider streets.

Supercharged web browsing
So, to the headline: 3G, or, more accurately, 3.5G, as there’s support for O2’s HSDPA network too. Unsurprisingly, it’s all good. Clearly, download speeds over are greatly improved over its EDGE-only predecessor.

But there’s more good news. We raced it against a Nokia N-series mobile running on Vodafone’s HSDPA network, and the iPhone was first nearly every time. Whether this is down to the network, or Safari’s superior rendering, is unclear, but the benefit is: your webpages and downloads, faster.

There’s more. Wi-Fi reception seems to be improved over the previous iPhone. In one part of our office, the new iPhone showed full wireless signal; the old iPhone only one bar.

Music and video playback are excellent. You still need a Wi-Fi network to connect to the iTunes Store, so you can’t threaten the data usage policy by downloading videos.

Well juiced
Battery life seems to be close to Apple’s claims: five hours of phone action, seven hours of video, and 24 hours of audio. All figures aside, it passed the real-life test – we haven’t been able to keep our hands off the thing, and it still had battery left at the end of the day.

Other iPhone 3G highlights come courtesy of the new 2.0 software. Microsoft Exchange support we’ll be handling as part of our review of the new third-party apps. The ability to delete and move multiple messages is a boon – although copy and paste is still absent. Support for PowerPoint and Office documents is welcome, and the new scientific calculator is a nice touch.

Breaking the Rules

I was thinking about the power of brands the other day. Not that I usually sit around thinking about brands. But I was  struggling with my iPhone -  not the iPhone 4, the older one.  I just updated it to OS 4 and am having such a downright negative experience with it. Since I downloaded the new OS,  the ATT 3G network has a weaker signal everywhere I go, when I do get a signal it is slower than molasses.  Wow, who would’ve thought it could be any slower. To download simple e-mails or upload a photo takes 10 minutes or more. I don’t know about you but I do not call that progress -  which is one generally expects when one upgrades, now isn’t it?

That got me thinking about all the other negative things going on with the iPhone, which are many.

• We all know the battery life of the iPhone just plain sucks -  although I hear the iPhone 4 is much better.  I had to buy a Mophie to extend the battery life because I couldn’t even use my iPhone for a day on the road… it died halfway through the day -  when I was barely using it. Not good.

• We all know the speaker on the iPhones is barely usable. Again, I hear that’s fixed on the iPhone4,  but what about the rest of us? How could Apple call that device a speaker with a straight face? I chatted with a friend this weekend who is now using his iPhone only as an iPod thanks to that lousy speaker. He bought a Spring 4G phone and LOVES it. Maybe I need another iPod….

• Then there’s the antenna issue with the new iPhone 4 -  but I won’t go there.  No reason to continue beating that dead horse.

Most smart phones would fail in the market with half of the above issues.  The slow network alone would’ve been the kiss of death, not to mention a battery that doesn’t last for more than four hours when you’re not even using the phone.  Yet the iPhone is revered by all who use it.

Is its success because of the power of the Apple brand? Is it because of the cool interface, the link to iTunes and its applications?  I’m not sure.

What I do know is that Apple is challenging a big-time status quo, with the iPhone and with the iPAD. Both devices have issues, both devices lacks some key features. In today’s technology market, such problems would kill another company. Yet they continue to fly off the shelves, and Apple continues to prosper.

Apple has proven that sometimes the status quo rules don’t have to apply to your business. Sometimes,  even the good rules can be broken -  rules like leading-edge functionality, products that work, user satisfaction.

Sometimes the power of your brand, the magic of the story you weave and the image you create can help you break even the tried and true rules.

But sooner or later – you do have to deliver satisfied customers.  I’ll be watching to see if Apple finally does just that.

Update to the latest software

Always make sure your iPod has the latest software. This is the first and most important tip… of all iPod battery tips.

Regular iPod use

For proper maintenance of your iPod’s battery, it’s important to keep the electrons in it moving occasionally. In other words, use your iPod regularly.

Use the ‘Hold’ switch

Set the ‘Hold’ switch on your iPod to the ‘Hold’ position whenever you are not using it. This will keep your iPod from accidentally waking from sleep and playing songs if its buttons are pressed while in your pocket or bag.

Wi-Fi

The latest iPod with Wi-Fi consumes power even if you are not using it to connect to a network to access the internet. Turn your Wi-Fi off to save battery power. To do this from your iPod’s main menu… go to ‘Settings > General > Network > Wi-Fi’.

Backlighting

Backlighting can use a lot of battery power. Only use the backlight when necessary. If you don’t need to use backlighting, turn it off. Choose ‘Settings > Backlight Timer > Off’ from your iPod’s main menu.

Equalizer

Adding EQs to playback uses more of your iPod processor, since they aren’t encoded in the song. Turn EQ off if you don’t use it.

If, however, you’ve added EQ to tracks in iTunes, you’ll need to set EQ to “flat” in order to have the effect of “off”, because your iPod keeps your iTunes settings intact. To turn off the Equalizer, choose ‘Settings > EQ > Off’ from your iPod’s main menu.

Use compressed songs

Your iPod’s cache works best with songs of average file sizes (less than 9 MB). If your audio files are large or uncompressed (including AIFF format), you may want to compress them, or use a different compression method, such as MP3 or AAC, when importing them into iTunes.

Also, consider breaking very long songs or tracks into shorter tracks that have smaller file sizes.

Avoid Fast forwarding through playlists

If you fast forward through your playlists frequently your iPod will be using more power thus decreasing overall battery life. By creating playlists in iTunes, you can decrease your need to fast forward.

Also using the shuffle feature may also help minimise your need to use the fast forward feature. I’ve always used an iPod battery backup when my iPod video couldn’t hold its charge and it has been very helpful.

Avoid changing tracks

Avoid changing tracks by pressing the Previous/Rewind or Next/Fast-forward buttons. If you frequently change tracks by pressing the Previous or Next buttons, your iPod has to turn on the hard drive to open the songs. This uses a lot of battery power.

Pause iPod when unattended

If you leave your iPod unattended, press Play/Pause to pause the song. If left playing, it will continue to play songs until the battery is drained — particularly if the repeat setting is set to ‘One’ or ‘All’. Put your iPod to sleep to save battery life. Press the ‘Play’ button for about 2 seconds until it goes to the sleep mode.

Keep your iPod at room temperature

Your iPod’s battery works best when it’s at room temperature, generally near 20° C, but you can use it anywhere between 0° to 35° C (about 32° to 95° F).

If you have left your iPod in the cold, let it warm up to room temperature before waking it from sleep. Otherwise, a low-battery icon may appear and it will be difficult to get it back from sleep.

If after warming up, your iPod does not wake from sleep, connect it to the power adapter, and press the ‘Menu’ and ‘Select’ buttons until the Apple logo appears.

* Do not leave iPod in a vehicle’s interior when parked in the sun. Temperatures may reach up to 150° F (65 °C).

* Do not leave iPod exposed to direct sunlight for extended periods of time.

Newer conductive materials (including, amorphous silicon, cadmium telluride and copper indium diselenide) only need to be about one micron thick, so material costs are significantly reduced.

But thin film solar cells are just the beginning. Here are a few more examples of the most cutting-edge and interesting advances in solar energy and the companies behind them.

Solar Energy – from salt : Rice Solar Energy, a spin-off of United Technologies, is planning a solar energy installation in Riverside County, California. Salt – 4.4 million gallons’ worth will be stored in a 538-foot tower surrounded by 18,000 mirrors called heliostats. The heliostats will aim light at the tower, subjecting the salt inside to such great temperatures that it melts, which in turn creates steam which then spins the turbine thus creating electricity.

Internet access – from sunlight : Late last year, Meraki, a provider of wireless networking solutions, developed a solar self-powered WiFi device. The Meraki “Solar” uses a solar panel and a solar-charged battery to provide Internet access in hard-to-wire areas. The units can be mounted on roofs or poles or anywhere else that receives sun exposure.

iPhone juice – without an outlet : Anyone who has an iPhone is plagued by the relatively low battery life, but we were recently alerted to a solution in that beacon of invention oddities, the SkyMall catalog. A company called Novothink recently developed the first Apple-approved solar charger for the iPhone. The $70 “Surge” is like an iPhone case, except it has a solar panel on the back. Just snap it on, and you’ll have full access to the iPhone, while you charge. It even comes with a cord so you can hang the iPhone from a backpack or your wrist while outside. It will keep you Twittering all day long.

While all of those devices may be interesting, the first question on the minds of many may be just how close we are to generating all of our householder electricity from solar power. The answer: Closer than you think. One Japanese company, The Seven Ryoju Estate Group Companies, recently announced that it has developed a rooftop unit called the “Eco Sky Roof” that can provide 65 percent of a household’s energy consumption from solar power. The roof works by creating a path of hot air between solar panels and a roof. That heat can be used to generate household heat and hot water, as well as electricity. The first installations are expected in 2010.

If Solar companies can stay the course and deliver on their promises, maybe a world powered by clean energy has a chance of becoming reality.

i need to know, cos i need like 3 pieces, and a guy is salling me his broken iphone at a very good prince but it 2g, and mine is 3g. i need a replacement for the home button, the speaker thing i guess i need the flex, and the sim “circuit” the one that goes inside, not the one that pops out to insert the sim.

i don’t think you can put the sim “circuit” the one that goes inside and the speaker because – The first generation iPhone supported the following frequencies: GSM and Quad-Band (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz). The iPhone 3G supports all of those frequencies, but added to the list quite a few more to enable running at 3G speeds, including UMTS/HSDPA (850, 1900, 2100 MHz). The iPhone 3G also supports GPS, which was not included in the original iPhone.
but i think you can change the home button because they are the same…..
